Animal Protection

The Green Group in the European Parliament has been at the forefront of campaigning to make animal rights a priority in European institutions. Jean and fellow Green MEP Caroline Lucas recently produced a publication detailing highlights of their work entitled Animal Protection: Green MEPs working for progress in the European Parliament. This covers the following topics:

• EU ban on battery cages for laying hens
• Animal experiments
• Cat and dog fur trade
• REACH legislation and animal testing
• Seal products trade
• Wild animals and habitats
• Animals in ‘entertainment’
• Live animal exports
• Intensive farming

Caroline is the vice chair of the Parliament’s cross-party animal welfare Intergroup and she works closely with the RSPCA and other groups in Brussels to get their proposals onto the Parliamentary agenda.  Through Caroline and the work of the Green Group, Jean is kept well briefed and always votes to improve animal protection across a broad range of areas.
